From March 23 to 29, 2017, Macalester College's Law Warschaw Gallery hosted the exhibition, Paul Schmelzer: Signifier, Signed, the first-ever public showing of the project. Instigated by Greg Fitz and curated by Jehra Patrick, the show included an unembellished hanging of signatures in the series, as well as an array of rejection letters, autographed headshots, and correspondence with participating celebrities and their handlers. A simple overhead projector invited visitors to sign "Paul Schmelzer" in a more ephemeral format: dry erase marker on transparencies.
On another wall, visitors were invited to share a more permanent signature on a wall that accumulated "Paul Schmelzers" over the course of the exhibition. All contributions are now part of the artist's archive.
